9th Grade Core Descriptions

Global Studies

Global Studies is the study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and of human activity as it affects and is affected by these, including the distribution of populations and resources, land use, and industries. In this class we will explore topics such as urbanization, migration, and globalization as well as analyze different charts, maps, graphs, and tables. We will research cause and effect relationships and determine how people have an effect on their environment and others. You will develop critical thinking skills as well as integrating visual and performing arts, reading, writing, and communication skills. to benefit future endeavors.

Core 1 Math

Integrated Mathematics 1 is the first course of a three-course sequence including Integrated Mathematics 1, Integrated Mathematics 2, and Integrated Mathematics 3. Integrated Math 1 is designed to use patterns, models, and conjectures to build mathematical understanding. Students taking this course will extend their knowledge in Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Modeling, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Students taking this course will use a variety of approaches to deepen their understanding, such as mathematical sense making, making and testing conjectures and justifying conclusions, using mathematical models to represent real-world data, providing clear and concise answers, and having computational and symbolic fluency. Students will problem solve using equations, graphs and tables and investigate linear relationships, including comparing and contrasting options and decision-making using algebraic models.

Physics

An introduction into the physical world and its properties. The course will emphasize practical application of integrated sciences with the support of inquiry-based learning.

Literacy

In English 9 students will review the basics of grammar, build vocabulary skills, refine essay writing and editing, develop critical thinking skills and learn to analyze works of literature. We will read (in and out of class) a wide variety of texts (i.e., novels, short stories, non-fiction, etc.). The ulmate goal is for each of us to become more informed citizens of the world who can positively contribute to society. And while we're here, let's try to have some fun!

Language

Students will have the option to select Spanish, French, and Chinese.
