The Arts are Social! The Arts are Emotional!

Social Emotional Learning is the foundation of the Burrell Arts Mission, Vision, and Values.

It is how we build community and relationships and engage in meaningful learning together.

Burrell Arts K8 defines Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as the process through which humansacquireandapplythe knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, embrace and manage emotions, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

Burrell Arts K8 empowers our Studio Teachers to explicitly teach and embed the activation of theSEL components into practice. Our Studio Teachers will incorporate SEL into their unit planning giving them the opportunity to illuminate the intersection between arts education and social-emotional learning. This work is guided by combining the CASEL five social emotional learning competencies with the Burrell Arts visual and performing arts standard.

SEL skills will also be embedded within classroom instruction and reinforced throughout the school day. Everyone at Burrell Arts K8 is responsible for teaching and reinforcing social/emotional skills.

Every interaction we have with our students we are teaching and they are learning.
